In June 2010, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins B Cell Lymphoma, which is a type of cancer that attacks the immune system reducing the body’s ability to produce infection fighting white blood cells. I had six month's of intensive chemo-therapy at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Freeman Hospital, Newcastle. Those six months were very hard, but I came through them and was given the all clear in March 2011. I now feel very well and I am running again.
My treatment was successful for a number of reasons. My treatment began soon after I discovered a lump in my armpit and the chemo-therapy was designed specifically for the type of cancer I had. Early and correct treatment are the main reasons for my success. However, thanks to a lifetime of regular exercise, I was in excellent health apart from the cancer and throughout the 'chemo' I took daily walks even when I didn't feel like it. I maintained a positive attitude and believed at all times that I would be cured. I had tremendous care and support from my wife, who kept me well fed. All of these things contributed greatly to the success of the treatment and to my ability to cope with it.
Now that I am well, I want to use my story to help others to defeat cancer. I am therefore delighted to be a patron of Bright Red, because it is a charity based in the North and specifically for blood cancer sufferers. (leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.)
If someone you know has one of these cancers and needs some help or support please contact Bright Red.
