Memories

Lindsay Dunn - the gadget gadgee

Lindsay Dunn was on a training trip to Italy with Barry Smith. (He coached Barry to win the IAAF’s Golden 5,000m; AAA 10,000m and to an Olympic Semi-final.) They were staying in a hotel with full board and they had the same waiter every day, Paolo.

Lindsay was always interested in the latest technology and he was often the first person to start using new running gadgets. Just before this trip, he had bought a new running watch that, among other things, could measure your pulse. He was showing all its functions to Barry at dinner one night when Paolo asked them what it was.

Lindsay explained that it was a watch, a stopwatch and could measure your heart rate. He was still wearing it, so he said, “Look, that’s my heart rate, 44.” Barry then tried it on and it showed that his pulse was 42.

“Can I try?” asked Paolo. He put it on and looked a little surprised because his reading was 76. (Which, of course, is completely normal for a non-athlete.)

Lindsay said, “76? Are you sure? That’s nearly twice fast as ours.” Then with a tone of serious concern in his voice he said, “Do you feel alright?” Paolo mumbled that he wasn’t sure, gave the watch back and wandered off looking worried.

The next day they had a different waiter at their table. They asked where Paolo was and the new waiter said, “He called in sick. Something about his heart.”

An inspirational kind friendly guy. I would often meet him when I was a skinny distance runner & student at Gateshead Technical College . We ‘ d often meet & pass down on the Team Valley on our training runs . I had shin splints at the time & he suggested NB 620s . I couldn’t believe the difference they made . He often cheekily suggested I joined his beloved Harriers but sadly I never did as I didn’t think I was good enough .
His advice & guidance was so well received & saved my athletics career & I have enjoyed over 40 years thank you my friend . You truly are a gentleman & will always be in my memories of athletics in Gateshead & the north east

I have quite a few and will post them chronologically in next few days. 1960/61 Winter Season Andy Leitch and I were 2nd year Youths and finished 1st and 2nd for Gateshead in every Road Race upto Christmas. Lindsay running for Darlington was just inside and outside the first 10 in all those Races. Congers RR on Boxing Day was the one everyone wanted win. Andy and I were expected to be 1st and 2nd again with Paul Snook of Darlington and RAF a probable shock winner. At halfway approaching the top of Joicey Bank there were 4 of us still in contention Leitch, Parker, Snook and Dunn. Andy and I tried to lose Snook on the hill but were shocked when Lindsay past us 20 yards from the top continued to put the boot in round the corner on the flat then ran away to a great shock win. When I went to congratulate him at the Prize Presentation he said standing smoking a fag ‘ I gave these up 2 weeks ago’. He never got near us the rest of the winter Season.
