Why I wrote it

I have been asked on here why I suddenly decided to write my story when I have been retired for so long. As I explain in the introduction, I haven't suddenly decided to write it. I started many years ago, and with the pressures of a business and a family it took me a very long time to complete it. I think the question could have been - is my story still relevant after all these years? I think it clearly is relevant because the best British runners are now running slower times than I did 25 years ago. My hope is that someone will learn something from my experience, which makes him or her into a better runner. There was a good article in the Independent on Sunday today, which reviews the book and discusses this point. Click here to read it.

Many thanks for your book. "I was running as fast as I dared. Today was indeed the day"! Well put, a marvellous read. Many aspects very well covered; training-wise, I particularly appreciated the specifics about peaking.

If you have time for a training question, how critical is the 25 minutes time-limit in your just-below-aerobic-threshold run? I do a similar hard 40 minute incline treadmill session, which is very motivational for me because it forces a substantial break in my working day, so I need a clear reason to shorten it!

Thanks again for creating one of the genuinely great running books. It'll be a spot-prize at our Lamington Classic next weekend, Australia's oldest trail run.

Dear Mr Spedding

I've just ordered your book having read an extract from a mens health magazine. It was just the boost I needed and very very relevant. Your comments on self belief and self worth really gave me a boost. I was made redundant in January and have recently gone self employed as a massage therapist. Every now and again I have nagging doubts in my mind but I've pulled myself together now and I'm now very determined to succeed. Many thanks.

The book is the story of my running development. This blog is the story of the book's development.
